LiDAR measurement for contractors in 2026: how it works, where the accuracy holds, and how to turn an on-site scan into a same-visit estimate.

LiDAR measurement lets a contractor measure a job site with an iPhone and price the work before leaving. The sensor ships on Pro iPhones and iPad Pro from 2020 onward, firing infrared pulses and timing their return to build a depth map. Phones without LiDAR still measure using ARKit plane detection, which tracks the room with the camera and motion sensors.

Accuracy holds well on short interior spans in good light and degrades with distance, bright sunlight, glass and featureless surfaces. That makes it suitable for painting, flooring, drywall, cleaning and remodel scoping, and unsuitable as the only measurement for cabinetry, countertops, glass or anything fabricated off site.

The real saving is not the measuring but removing the transcription: a measurement captured against the job with a photo feeds the estimate directly instead of being retyped from a notepad..
