Before the visit

  • Check the maintenance contract: systems covered, visit type and anything excluded
  • Read the site history: last visit record, open faults, recommendations not yet quoted
  • Check the equipment list for the site: panel, power supplies, detectors, sounders, signalling
  • Confirm the appointment and access with the customer
  • Agree with the customer how the alarm receiving centre and keyholders will be told the system is under test

Arrival

  • Sign in and agree with the customer which areas you can enter and when
  • Put the system into engineer or test mode as agreed, and note the time
  • Ask the customer about false alarms, faults or changes to the building since the last visit

Control panel and power supplies

  • Mains supply present and the fused spur labelled
  • Standby battery: age, condition, terminals, and a load test result recorded
  • Charging voltage within the manufacturer range
  • Fuses, tamper switches and enclosure lids checked
  • Panel date and time correct

Detection devices

  • Walk test every movement detector and note any that fail or are obstructed
  • Open and close every door and window contact
  • Test shock, glass break and other detectors to the manufacturer method
  • Test hold-up or panic devices only by the procedure agreed with the customer and the receiving centre
  • Check tamper on each device and note any device that needs replacing

Warning devices

  • Internal sounders operate
  • External sounder and strobe operate, housing intact, self-activating battery checked
  • Sounder timers and settings as agreed with the customer

Signalling and remote services

  • Signalling path test with the receiving centre where the system is monitored; record the reference and time
  • Secondary path tested where fitted
  • Remote app or cloud connection checked if the customer uses one

Event log, users and wiring

  • Review the event log since the last visit and note repeat alarms or faults
  • Check the user list with the customer and remove users who have left
  • Visual check of cabling, fixings and junction boxes where accessible
  • Photograph anything defective

Finishing the visit

  • Return the system to normal and confirm with the receiving centre where monitored
  • Explain faults found and recommendations, and offer a quote for remedial work
  • Record the work done, results, faults and actions on the service record
  • Customer signature and name
  • Next visit due date set on the contract
